COSCO SHIPPING’s subsidiary China Marine Bunker (PetroChina) Co., Ltd. has completed northern China’s first bonded green methanol bunkering operation at Dalian Port.
A total of 500 metric tonnes of domestically produced green fuels were supplied to China’s first methanol dual-fuel container vessel, COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU.
The operation marks the first time a northern Chinese port has supplied international vessels with ISCC-certified domestically produced green methanol, setting a model for accelerating Dalian’s development into a Northeast Asian green ship fuel bunkering hub.
The green methanol was sourced entirely from China’s largest production bases in Heilongjiang province and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
Produced through proprietary gasification synthesis technology using renewable feedstocks such as agricultural residues and recycled tyres, the fuel holds international ISCC certification for sustainability and carbon neutrality.
The green methanol produced in Heilongjiang province achieves a carbon emission reduction rate of over 100 per cent, reaching an internationally leading standard.
“Amid the accelerated decarbonisation in the global shipping industry, this successful bunkering operation not only effectively completed the closed-loop process of the green methanol ‘production – transportation – storage – bunkering’ chain in northeastern China, but also helped transform China’s domestic renewable resource advantages into a continuous driving force for promoting the high-quality development of strategic emerging industries, demonstrating China’s strong capabilities in the field of marine green energy,” COSCO SHIPPING reported.
As COSCO SHIPPING’s first methanol dual-fuel vessel, COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU has a total length of 366 metres and a maximum capacity of 16,136 TEUs. After this bunkering, the vessel will continue its green journey on the trans-Pacific routes.
Following the successful methanol bunkering operations at China’s three key ports — Dalian Port, Yangshan Port in Shanghai, and Yangpu Port in Hainan province — a green methanol supply chain network spanning from the country’s north to south has taken shape. This lays a solid foundation for COSCO SHIPPING’s future decarbonisation endeavours and offers green solutions for the global shipping industry.
Last month, CMA CGM announced that the COSCO SHANGHAI vessel will be phased into its AMERIGO service.
