Port of Gothenburg launches hydrogen refueling station
The Port of Gothenburg has announced the launch of a hydrogen refueling station for heavy traffic.
The station launched over the weekend and is located adjacent to one of the port’s busiest entrances, as well as one of Sweden’s most truck-heavy locations, supplying exclusively green hydrogen.
Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg, said: “The large flow of trucks to the port and the possibility to refuel work machinery make the location for this hydrogen refueling station ideal. Combined with several existing charging stations around the port, heavy land transport at the Port of Gothenburg is now fully ready for a transition to both electricity and hydrogen.”
The station is located next to Gate 6, the entry to the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal. The entrance road leading to the gate is one of Sweden’s most frequently used routes, with 400,000 heavy vehicle passes annually.
When Stena Line moves its present Germany and Denmark terminals to Arendal, directly west of the RoRo terminal, the number of cars in the region is projected to grow considerably more in the following years.
Hydri operates the station, which is part of a Swedish hydrogen infrastructure network that will include roughly 20 hydrogen stations in 2024 and 2025.
The Swedish Energy Agency partially funds the first station, which is located near the Port of Gothenburg.
Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy and Chairman of the Board at Hydri, stated: “Green hydrogen has great potential to drive the transition of heavy transport. With this refueling station, we are paving the way forward towards a carbon-neutral transport sector.”
Recently, the Port of Gothenburg inaugurated a new RoRo shipping route to Chinese ports via Singapore.
