The UK government has kicked off a multi-million-pound Zero <\/p>\n

Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) competition to help decarbonise the <\/p>\n

country\u2019s maritime sector. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"UK<\/p>\n

The ZEVI competition, launched on 6 February, will see \u00a377 million ($92.87 <\/p>\n

million) invested into clean maritime technology.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It will also see innovative companies apply for the funding, which must be <\/p>\n

used to decarbonise technology both on board and shoreside.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The funding will take the tech from the factory to the sea through <\/p>\n

identifying which projects will have a long-term impact in reducing <\/p>\n

emissions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The government requires that the successful projects show that they could <\/p>\n

use this money to work with major UK ports and operators to launch a <\/p>\n

zero-emission vessel by 2025.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Examples of such technology include battery electric vessels, shoreside <\/p>\n

electrical power, ships running on low carbon fuels like hydrogen or ammonia, <\/p>\n

and wind-assisted ferries.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

UK waters are expected to see zero-emission ferries, cruises, and cargo <\/p>\n

ships within two years.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cOur funding will support a cleaner freight system, a more environmentally <\/p>\n

friendly tourism industry, and a net-zero maritime sector,\u201d said UK\u2019s Transport <\/p>\n

Secretary, Mark Harper.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to Defence Secretary and Shipbuilding Tsar, Ben Wallace, this <\/p>\n

competition will be overseen by Innovate UK, which has a successful record of <\/p>\n

delivering similar competitions across government.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Innovate UK, Executive Director for Net Zero, Mike Biddle, said: \u201cInnovate <\/p>\n

UK will work closely with the Department for Transport in delivering the Zero <\/p>\n

Emission Vessel and Infrastructure competition, resulting in multi-year real <\/p>\n

world demonstrations of clean maritime technologies around the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The government is also calling on universities across the UK to join forces <\/p>\n

to establish a new Clean Maritime Research Hub, with \u00a37.4 million ($8.94 <\/p>\n

million) funding from government and additional funding from academia and <\/p>\n

industry.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Research in the fundamental science behind clean maritime technologies will <\/p>\n

be delivered by the hub, building evidence and expertise for the maritime <\/p>\n

sector.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It will also support skills development across the industry and generate <\/p>\n

knowledge for maritime decision-makers, according to the government.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The ZEVI fund and Clean Maritime Research Hub are part of the UK SHORE <\/p>\n

programme, launched in March 2022 with \u00a3206 million ($248.6 million) in <\/p>\n

funding.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

UK SHORE aims to tackle shipping emissions and advance the UK towards a <\/p>\n

sustainable shipping future.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The hub will be delivered in partnership with and co-funded by the <\/p>\n

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research <\/p>\n

and Innovation (UKRI).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This investment has come almost half a year after the UK government <\/p>\n

launched a five-year maritime strategy focussing on enhanced seabed mapping and <\/p>\n
