A new ISO standard, ISO 6319, has been published to guide ports, shipowners <\/p>\n

and operators on conducting hull cleaning in an environmentally responsible <\/p>\n

way.<\/p>\n

The standard is designed to help shipping operators and regulators manage <\/p>\n

biofouling without releasing organisms or chemicals into the water, reducing the <\/p>\n

spread of invasive aquatic species while improving vessel efficiency and <\/p>\n

lowering fuel consumption and emissions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cBiofouling on ships\u2019 hulls can spread invasive species and damage <\/p>\n

ecosystems. It also increases drag, reducing vessel efficiency and raising fuel <\/p>\n

consumption and greenhouse gas emissions,\u201d said Irene \u00d8vsteb\u00f8 Tvedten, Senior <\/p>\n

Adviser at Bellona and Project Manager for the Clean Hull Initiative (CHI), <\/p>\n

which led development of ISO 6319.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The standard offers a clear structure for documenting hull-cleaning <\/p>\n

activities, helping operators demonstrate compliance and enabling authorities to <\/p>\n

assess whether the technology used meets environmental safeguards.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Tvedten added: \u201cOn Wednesday, the standard was finally published and is now <\/p>\n

available for global stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Port of Antwerp-Bruges contributed to the standard. Luc Van Espen, Port <\/p>\n

Environment Expert, said: \u201cAn internationally accepted standard creates a level <\/p>\n

playing field and limits the transfer of invasive species between ports.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Global approval procedures for hull cleaning currently vary, creating <\/p>\n

operational uncertainty for shipowners.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a global RoRo operator and ISO 6319 contributor, <\/p>\n

highlighted the benefits of the standard for predictability.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Senior Manager, Kim-Helge Brynjulfsen, said: \u201cWhen applications follow the <\/p>\n

same structure and technical specifications, authorities can process them more <\/p>\n

efficiently. For shipping companies, this means fewer disruptions and greater <\/p>\n

operational certainty.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Other contributors include Jotun, a marine coatings and hull-cleaning <\/p>\n

technology provider. Petter Korslund, Regulatory Affairs Manager, noted: \u201cISO <\/p>\n

6319 helps authorities assess whether cleaning systems sufficiently protect the <\/p>\n

environment. There are significant quality differences between systems, and the <\/p>\n

standard provides clarity for decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Riggio, Technical Director at BEMA, added: \u201cISO 6319 guides <\/p>\n

authorities on mitigating risks while promoting environmentally responsible hull <\/p>\n

cleaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tvedten emphasised the collaborative effort behind the standard: <\/p>\n

\u201cCompetitors put commercial interests aside to agree on terms for hull cleaning. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a significant achievement for proactive environmental management.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The standard was initiated by the Clean Hull Initiative four years ago <\/p>\n

under Bellona\u2019s leadership, with the aim of encouraging sufficiently frequent <\/p>\n

cleaning to maintain minimal biofouling.<\/p>\n

In January 2025, Southern Ports became the fifth port authority globally to <\/p>\n

achieve certification (ISO 55001:2014) for its integrated asset management <\/p>\n
