The UK alongside the US, Norway, and the Netherlands will roll out <\/p>\n

end-to-end decarbonised<\/a> shipping routes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joint statements were made on the backdrop of the UN Climate Conference <\/p>\n

(COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Green shipping corridors are specific maritime routes decarbonised from end <\/p>\n

to end, including both landside infrastructure and vessels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Setting up such routes involves using zero-emission fuel or energy, putting <\/p>\n

in place refuelling or recharging infrastructure at ports, and deploying <\/p>\n

zero-emission capable vessels to demonstrate cleaner, more environmentally <\/p>\n

friendly shipping.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In particular, the UK and the US have agreed to launch a special Green <\/p>\n

Shipping Corridor Task Force focused on bringing together experts in the sector <\/p>\n

to encourage research and development.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Committing to roll out green shipping corridors will help the sector to <\/p>\n

comply with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature rise to <\/p>\n

1.5\u00b0C by the end of the century.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenges posed by climate change are clear and the need to <\/p>\n

decarbonise maritime has never been greater,\u201d said UK Transport Secretary, Mark <\/p>\n

Harper.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve committed to work alongside global partners to clean up <\/p>\n

the sector, improve air quality in and around our ports and coastal communities, <\/p>\n

and drive green investment into our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The international maritime sector is currently responsible for almost 3 per <\/p>\n

cent of global emissions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cGreen corridors can play an essential role in stimulating early action to <\/p>\n

adopt low and net-zero emission technologies and fuels,\u201d said UK Chamber of <\/p>\n

Shipping CEO, Sarah Treseder.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s announcement is a welcome step in the international action <\/p>\n

required to decarbonise shipping.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK shipping community is committed to working with the UK government <\/p>\n

in securing bold action at the International Maritime Organization to provide <\/p>\n

more ambitious and concrete decarbonisation strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The government also recently launched a \u00a360 million ($68.8 million) clean <\/p>\n

maritime demonstration competition on World Maritime Day to fund emission <\/p>\n
