An empty container transportation centre has started operations at <\/p>\n

the Port of Shanghai, the largest container port in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Located in the in the Yangshan Special Comprehensive Bonded Zone, the empty <\/p>\n

container transportation centre for Northeast Asia started kicked off operations <\/p>\n

on 3 September.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The new centre has capacity to handle a throughput of 3 million TEU per <\/p>\n

year and it is expected to expand the port\u2019s handling capability, boost domestic <\/p>\n

and foreign trade, and solidify Shanghai\u2019s status as an international shipping <\/p>\n

centre, official sources said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new centre will help us to apply digitalised and intelligent <\/p>\n

management to promote communications between ports and shipping enterprises, so <\/p>\n

as to provide empty container services for shipping operators as well as <\/p>\n

customers in Northeast Asia, along the Yangtze River Delta region, and areas <\/p>\n

along the Yangtze River,\u201d said Gu Jinshan, Chairman of Shanghai International <\/p>\n

Port Group (SIGP) who operates the port.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to SIPG, the launch of the centre means more empty containers <\/p>\n

will be allocated to the Yangtze River Delta region and surrounding coastal <\/p>\n

ports via water routes, highways, and railways.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Construction works for the centre began in August 2021, jointly developed <\/p>\n

by SIPG and shipping giants Maersk, CMA CGM, MSC and Evergreen.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Despite disruptions brought by COVID-19, the Shanghai port saw a steady <\/p>\n

container throughput growth from January to August, with a traffic of 26.8 <\/p>\n

million TEU from January to July.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the world\u2019s largest container port, the Shanghai port is speeding up <\/p>\n

the construction of a global shipping network together with ports around the <\/p>\n

Yangtze River Delta region,\u201d said Zhao Yihuai, deputy director of Lin-gang <\/p>\n

Special Area Administration.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe centre will further raise the resource allocation efficiency of the <\/p>\n

Shanghai port and contribute to the Shanghai port\u2019s global competitiveness and <\/p>\n

international influence.\u201d<\/p>\n
