Indonesian port operator Pelindo and a consortium of the country\u2019s <\/p>\n

sovereign wealth fund have entered an agreement to invest in the expansion of <\/p>\n

the Belawan New Container Terminal (BNCT) in Sumatra Island.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The deal is part of a $7.5 billion partnership between the Indonesia <\/p>\n

Investment Authority (INA) and UAE-based DP World, according to a joint <\/p>\n

statement by Pelindo and the INA.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Financial details of the transaction have not yet been disclosed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Pelindo and the consortium will manage BNCT with the aim to transform the <\/p>\n

port into a major transportation and maritime hub in the Southeast Asia region \u2013 <\/p>\n

by increasing terminal capacity, direct calls, and connectivity with other <\/p>\n

ports.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, BNCT\u2019s capacity will more than double to 1.4 million <\/p>\n

TEU in the next six years, which would strengthen Belawan\u2019s position in the <\/p>\n

Malacca Straits, the firms said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UAE will become our investment and economic partner in various sectors <\/p>\n

and will continue to support the transportation, infrastructure and investment <\/p>\n

in the future,\u201d said Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, Indonesia\u2019s Vice Minister for <\/p>\n

state-owned enterprises.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Wirjoatmodjo added that the deal is expected to be closed before the end of <\/p>\n

the year.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Belawan is currently a feeder for other large ports, including the Port of <\/p>\n

Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas and Port Klang in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
