The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and the International <\/p>\n

Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) have signed a two-year Coalition <\/p>\n

partnership agreement aimed at accelerating decarbonisation of the maritime <\/p>\n

sector.<\/p>\n

\"GCMD,<\/p>\n

This collaboration was announced at the IAPH 2025 World Ports Conference in <\/p>\n

Kobe, Japan.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This partnership brings together GCMD\u2019s expertise in closing operational, <\/p>\n

safety, and technical gaps across the shipping value chain with IAPH\u2019s Clean <\/p>\n

Marine Fuels and Port Readiness Level expert working groups, as part of its <\/p>\n

global port network comprising more than 200 port authorities and operators in <\/p>\n

over 85 countries.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Together, GCMD and IAPH aim to strengthen the industry\u2019s readiness for <\/p>\n

shipping\u2019s fuel transition by tackling challenges and seizing opportunities in <\/p>\n

advancing alternative fuels bunkering, developing port infrastructure, and <\/p>\n

shaping evolving regulatory frameworks.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ports are uniquely positioned to accelerate maritime decarbonisation. They <\/p>\n

provide essential local expertise, including assessing navigational risks, <\/p>\n

liaising with regulators, and engaging with local communities to ensure safe <\/p>\n

pilots and trials, and enabling the eventual safe and large-scale adoption of <\/p>\n

low-carbon fuels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In parallel, GCMD executes pilots across the value chain, co-develops <\/p>\n

risk-mitigation strategies for deploying new fuels, and establishes operating <\/p>\n

procedures for activities such as safe ammonia bunkering and liquid CO2 <\/p>\n

offloading.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

By tailoring findings to port-specific conditions and sharing results <\/p>\n

across multiple ports, GCMD seeks to close knowledge gaps and build globally <\/p>\n

applicable practices.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Through its Clean Marine Fuels Working Group, IAPH has created practical <\/p>\n

tools for ports and shipping that facilitate safe and efficient bunker <\/p>\n

operations for all existing and upcoming clean marine fuels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Leveraging its global port network, IAPH will collaborate with GCMD to <\/p>\n

refine its own suite of tools and co-develop new ones to assist ports, <\/p>\n

shipowners, and operators in adopting new bunkering fuels in a safe and <\/p>\n

efficient manner, as well as in the transportation of low- and zero-carbon fuels <\/p>\n

as cargo.<\/p>\n

Professor Lynn Loo, CEO, GCMD, said: \u201cIn nearly all of GCMD\u2019s pilots, ports <\/p>\n

have been pivotal to our success, whether in enabling the world\u2019s first <\/p>\n

ship-to-ship ammonia transfer at the Pilbara, bunkering across six biofuel <\/p>\n

supply chains in Singapore or the Port of Rotterdam, or demonstrating the full <\/p>\n

value chain for onboard captured CO2 in China.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur collaboration with IAPH brings global reach and influence that will <\/p>\n

help us deepen our work with ports, turning pilot learnings into scalable <\/p>\n

operations essential for the energy transition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Patrick Verhoeven, Managing Director, IAPH, commented: \u201cWe look forward <\/p>\n

to teaming up with GCMD\u2019s experts, who will work with our port members to <\/p>\n

co-develop tools to help further accelerate the decarbonisation of the maritime <\/p>\n

sector and to derisk long-term investments in port infrastructure, which will be <\/p>\n

essential for the industry\u2019s energy transition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this summer, the IAPH unveiled a new set of cyber resilience <\/p>\n

guidelines to address the risks associated with emerging technologies in the <\/p>\n
