{"id":296,"date":"2025-08-19T11:44:48","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T03:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/imo-updates-rules-on-biofuel-blends-for-bunker-ships\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T11:44:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T03:44:48","slug":"imo-updates-rules-on-biofuel-blends-for-bunker-ships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/imo-updates-rules-on-biofuel-blends-for-bunker-ships\/","title":{"rendered":"IMO updates rules on biofuel blends for bunker ships"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"max-width:900px; margin:0 auto; background-color:rgb(246,246,246); padding:20px;line-height:30px\">\n<p>The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted interim guidance <\/p>\n<p>on the carriage of biofuel blends with MARPOL Annex I cargoes by conventional <\/p>\n<p>bunker ships.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1755575023443238-1.jpg\" alt=\"IMO updates rules on biofuel blends for bunker ships\" title=\"IMO updates rules on biofuel blends for bunker ships\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; padding:20px 0px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Under the new guidance, the maximum permitted biofuel blend ratio has <\/p>\n<p>increased from 25 to 30 per cent by volume.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This is allowed only if specific conditions are met.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The guidance applies to bunker ships classified as oil tankers under MARPOL <\/p>\n<p>Annex I Regulation 1.5. These vessels must also be certified to carry and <\/p>\n<p>deliver marine fuel oil.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The crew must discharge all tank residues or washings ashore. Ships may <\/p>\n<p>retain them only if their oil discharge monitoring equipment is approved for the <\/p>\n<p>specific biofuel blend.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If the ship meets these conditions, it can retain its existing <\/p>\n<p>International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate without modification.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Bunker ships carrying blends over 30 per cent must follow MARPOL Annex II <\/p>\n<p>and Chapter 17 of the IBC Code.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>On non-bunker ships, blends of 25 per cent or less fall under MARPOL Annex <\/p>\n<p>I.
