{"id":366,"date":"2025-03-31T09:55:50","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T01:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/hapag-lloyd-plans-to-retrofit-five-ships-to-methanol\/"},"modified":"2025-03-31T09:55:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T01:55:50","slug":"hapag-lloyd-plans-to-retrofit-five-ships-to-methanol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/hapag-lloyd-plans-to-retrofit-five-ships-to-methanol\/","title":{"rendered":"Hapag-Lloyd plans to retrofit five ships to methanol"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"max-width:900px; margin:0 auto; background-color:rgb(246,246,246); padding:20px;line-height:30px\">\n<p>Hapag-Lloyd, in collaboration with Seaspan Corporation and MAN Energy <\/p>\n<p>Solutions, has announced its plans to convert five 10,100 TEU container vessels <\/p>\n<p>to methanol.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1743385597722278-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hapag-Lloyd plans to retrofit five ships to methanol\" title=\"Hapag-Lloyd plans to retrofit five ships to methanol\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; padding:20px 0px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This follows a successful test of a MAN S90 engine retrofitted for methanol <\/p>\n<p>by MAN Energy Solutions and Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The engine\u2019s switch from traditional fuel to methanol paves the way for <\/p>\n<p>greener, more sustainable shipping, with over 50 vessels in Hapag-Lloyd\u2019s fleet <\/p>\n<p>now primed for this innovation.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Methanol is a sustainable alternative fuel that significantly reduces <\/p>\n<p>carbon emissions compared to traditional fuels.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The five retrofitted vessels have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by <\/p>\n<p>30,000 to 50,000 metric tonnes annually, equivalent to taking thousands of cars <\/p>\n<p>off the road.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Dr Maximilian Rothkopf, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Hapag-Lloyd, said: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur methanol retrofit project is another step on our journey to decarbonize our <\/p>\n<p>entire fleet by 2045.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy making these ships methanol-ready by 2026, we\u2019re not only shrinking our <\/p>\n<p>carbon footprint \u2013 we\u2019re also meeting the growing demand for greener transport <\/p>\n<p>solutions from our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Recently, a Hapag-Lloyd delegate met with the Sri Lanka Port Authority <\/p>\n<p>(SLPA) Chairman to explore business collaborations.
