The Port of Long Beach, and Shenzhen Port Group, along with <\/p>\n

multiple partners have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work <\/p>\n

together to decarbonise ocean trade.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The other establishments involved in the MoU are Hutchison Ports YANTIAN <\/p>\n

(YANTIAN), South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), and <\/p>\n

the North American Representative Office of Shenzhen.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

These representatives from each party signed the MoU on 22 September in <\/p>\n

Shenzhen, China.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the port, the memorandum offers a framework for coordinating <\/p>\n

technical exchanges and programs, initiating collaborative efforts to deploy <\/p>\n

clean technologies, promoting sustainable infrastructure development in the <\/p>\n

marine sector, and promoting economic growth with a focus on sustainability and <\/p>\n

public health.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Potential collaborations could include maritime technology demonstration <\/p>\n

projects, programs to attract cleaner oceangoing vessels \u2013 because vessels are a <\/p>\n

major source of emissions associated with international trade \u2013 and information <\/p>\n

exchanges held via virtual meetings and regional workshops.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Port of Long Beach CEO, Mario Cordero, said: \u201cOne of the most important <\/p>\n

parts of strategic partnerships like this is the ability to target shipborne <\/p>\n

emissions, a source we have little power to regulate as a local port <\/p>\n

authority.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see the potential for this agreement to make fleets cleaner sooner. The <\/p>\n

technologies and practices we develop through this agreement also have the <\/p>\n

potential to have a positive impact on the environment and economies far beyond <\/p>\n

our two ports and cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

South Coast AQMD Executive Officer, Wayne Nastri, stated: \u201cWorking together <\/p>\n

with our port partners, we have seen firsthand how we can accelerate the <\/p>\n

reduction of harmful emissions in nearby communities. The South Coast AQMD is <\/p>\n

excited to work with all our partners in this agreement to continue developing <\/p>\n

innovative strategies to reduce emissions and improve public health.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Shenzhen Port Group Chairman, Zhaoyang Hu, said: \u201cBuilding on the signing <\/p>\n

of this memorandum, we will drive initiatives in new fuel bunkering <\/p>\n

technologies, such as green methanol, and the development of zero-carbon RoRo <\/p>\n

terminals.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cBy enhancing communication and information sharing between the two ports, <\/p>\n

we aim to improve cargo transportation efficiency and establish more advanced <\/p>\n

green shipping corridors. These efforts will play a key role in achieving global <\/p>\n

Dual-Carbon Goal and fostering deeper economic and trade cooperation between <\/p>\n

China and the US.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The memorandum will also reportedly look into the possibility of a Sister <\/p>\n

Ports Agreement between the Port of Long Beach, which handled 8 million TEU in <\/p>\n

2023, and YANTIAN, one of the world\u2019s largest container terminals managed by a <\/p>\n

single operator.<\/p>\n

Recently, the Port of Long Beach released a final study examining a <\/p>\n

proposal by Tesoro Refining and Marketing Co. LLC to demolish the Tesoro <\/p>\n
