Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, an NYK Group firm, will use the vessel for tugboat <\/p>\n<p>operations in Tokyo Bay for a three-month trial period.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This vessel was part of a Green Innovation Fund Project launched in October <\/p>\n<p>2021 by Japan\u2019s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization <\/p>\n<p>(NEDO) to create vessels powered by locally built ammonia engines.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The predecessor, the same-named LNG-fuelled tugboat, was constructed in <\/p>\n<p>August 2015 and was Japan\u2019s first LNG-fuelled vessel.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>After eight years of tug duty in Tokyo Bay, the vessel was stationed at the <\/p>\n<p>NYK Group\u2019s Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. for conversion into an ammonia-powered <\/p>\n<p>vessel.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The main engine and other components were replaced with ammonia-fuelled <\/p>\n<p>ones, and sea testing was carried out with ammonia as fuel.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The finished vessel has been named Sakigake, with the hope of being a <\/p>\n<p>pioneer of ammonia-fueled vessels in the same way as LNG-fuelled vessels <\/p>\n<p>were.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As part of the NEDO\u2019s Green Innovation Fund Project, NYK is working with <\/p>\n<p>Japan Engine Corporation, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., IHI Power Systems, and <\/p>\n<p>ClassNK to develop an ammonia-fuelled medium gas carrier (AFMGC). This vessel is <\/p>\n<p>expected to be delivered in November 2026.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Recently, NYK signed an agreement on the marine shipment of green ammonia <\/p>\n<p>to Japan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd.
