{"id":606,"date":"2024-05-11T10:41:49","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T02:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/uk-government-implements-anti-fouling-shipping-regulation\/"},"modified":"2024-05-11T10:41:49","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T02:41:49","slug":"uk-government-implements-anti-fouling-shipping-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/uk-government-implements-anti-fouling-shipping-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"UK government implements anti-fouling shipping regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"max-width:900px; margin:0 auto; background-color:rgb(246,246,246); padding:20px;line-height:30px\">\n<p><strong>The UK government has announced that the Maritime and Coastguard <\/p>\n<p>Agency (MCA) would increase ecological safeguards at sea through new laws <\/p>\n<p>controlling ship antifouling systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hajomech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1715391160574551-1.jpg\" alt=\"UK government implements anti-fouling shipping regulation\" title=\"UK government implements anti-fouling shipping regulation\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; padding:20px 0px\"\/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new UK regulation enforces an international agreement that prohibits <\/p>\n<p>the use of cybutryne in marine paints, which has been shown to damage marine <\/p>\n<p>flora and wildlife and can enter the food chain.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The laws, which go into effect on 10 May, apply to all UK-flagged ships, <\/p>\n<p>wherever they sail, as well as ships flagged by other nations when in UK or <\/p>\n<p>controlled seas. They also preserve the current restriction on equally dangerous <\/p>\n<p>organotin chemicals.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The aim is to reduce or eradicate contamination from such compounds in UK <\/p>\n<p>waterways, therefore assisting the worldwide response to the problem.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Merchant Shipping (Anti-Fouling Systems) Regulations 2024 have been <\/p>\n<p>legally adopted by the MCA, based on the modified International Maritime <\/p>\n<p>Organization\u2019s (IMO) convention.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In addition to addressing this form of marine pollution, the new measures <\/p>\n<p>simplify rules by consolidating them into a single location, making it easier to <\/p>\n<p>keep up with future changes.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>MCA Chief Executive, Virginia McVea, said: \u201cWe know these substances are <\/p>\n<p>proven to have harmful ecological effects, so this action is important to <\/p>\n<p>protect our environment.
