The City of Yokohama, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC) and Maersk have <\/p>\n

signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of green methanol <\/p>\n

bunkering infrastructure at the Port of Yokohama, Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Maersk<\/p>\n

This is the location of APM Terminal\u2019s (APMT) Minami-Honmoku container <\/p>\n

terminal. This latest agreement aims to support Maersk\u2019s growing fleet of 16,000 <\/p>\n

TEU green methanol-powered container vessels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Under the terms of the partnership, the carrier will equip 25 container <\/p>\n

vessels with dual-fuel engines capable of sailing on green methanol.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The successful implementation of this initiative heavily relies on the <\/p>\n

establishment of port bunkering infrastructure for methanol worldwide.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The collaboration will reportedly focus on examining operational <\/p>\n

feasibility and developing port facilities required for green methanol bunkering <\/p>\n

at the Port of Yokohama.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cYokohama Port has proudly held the record for the highest number of <\/p>\n

foreign vessels calls in Japan for around 60 years, underscoring its critical <\/p>\n

role in maritime transportation where \u2018fuel supply and bunkering for vessels\u2019 <\/p>\n

holds significant importance,\u201d said Takeharu Yamanaka, Mayor of Yokohama.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cMoving forward, the three parties involved will collaborate to promote the <\/p>\n

use of green methanol in accordance with the memorandum.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cYokohama aims to spearhead the development of Japan\u2019s green shipping <\/p>\n

corridors while also aiming to explore and invite more like-minded future <\/p>\n

partners to join the initiative,\u201d Yamanaka added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Masashi Fujii, President of Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, added: \u201cWe believe <\/p>\n

that the establishment of methanol as a ship fuel supply base in Japan is an <\/p>\n

important initiative that will contribute to international maritime transport <\/p>\n

and carbon neutrality of Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Minami-Honmoku container terminal offers the deepest water berth in <\/p>\n

Japan with a total length of 1,600 metres and a draft of 18 metres, reported <\/p>\n

APMT.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the only terminal in Japan capable of handling vessels of over <\/p>\n

14,000 TEU with capabilities up to 24,000 TEU.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Equipped with Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes with a maximum outreach of 24 <\/p>\n

rows, the terminal covers a total area of 854,000 square metres and has an <\/p>\n

annual handling capacity of approximately 2.4 million TEU.<\/p>\n

The terminal has the option of increasing handling capacity through <\/p>\n

expansion onto neighbouring land.<\/p>\n

Maersk and City of Yokohama on this green methanol bunkering initiative, which <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In late 2023, APMT Callao began construction on Stage 3A of the <\/p>\n

Multipurpose North Terminal Modernization Project at the Port of Callao.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

More recently, Maersk confirmed the timely completion of the Phase 2 of the <\/p>\n
