The Port of Kalundborg, Denmark, has announced it will electrify <\/p>\n

all cranes in its deep-water container terminal within seven months to further <\/p>\n

lift the standard of responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The terminal, operated by APM Terminals (APMT) since March 2021, <\/p>\n

additionally announced that the container handling equipment in the short term <\/p>\n

will run on HVO100 fuel \u2013 or hydrotreated vegetable oil \u2013 reducing CO2 emissions <\/p>\n

by 90 per cent.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the longer term, the terminal will look into other decarbonised <\/p>\n

solutions for the container handling equipment, for instance batteries.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The announcement was made on 31 October ahead of the first call at the <\/p>\n

terminal by Laura Maersk, the world\u2019s first hydrogen powered container <\/p>\n

vessel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The commitment by Port of Kalundborg to electrify its cranes, and for APMT <\/p>\n

to switch to HVO100 fuel means that within months, the terminal will offer <\/p>\n

customers a huge reduction in landside emissions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Kalundborg will become one of only a handful of APMT to use the biofuel, <\/p>\n

joining APMT Gothenburg and P400 in Los Angeles which has used a similar <\/p>\n

renewable diesel since 2021.<\/p>\n

Mikael Gutman, CEO APM Terminals Nordics, said the Port of Kalundborg has <\/p>\n

\u201cvast potential\u201d as an environmentally friendly and faster route to the <\/p>\n

important market in and around Zealand.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the measures we are taking, we can offer a green gateway to the <\/p>\n

Zealand market,\u201d added Gutman.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only is this unique in a Danish context, it is also unique <\/p>\n

internationally and places Kalundborg on the world map as a leader of the green <\/p>\n

energy transition,\u201d Gutman added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the summer of 2023, APMT reached an agreement with the Port of <\/p>\n

Kalundborg in Denmark to extend the concession of Kalundborg container terminal <\/p>\n

to 2033.<\/p>\n

More recently, APMT and DP World announced an initiative to accelerate <\/p>\n

decarbonisation of the world\u2019s terminals through the widespread electrification <\/p>\n
