PD Ports has confirmed a \u00a323 million ($29 million) investment in a <\/p>\n

new, state of the art dredging vessel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"PD<\/p>\n

The 71-metre long dredger, which has already been named the Emerald Duchess <\/p>\n

following a competition among PD Ports employees, will arrive at Teesport next <\/p>\n

summer.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The vessel was designed and built to strict specifications by famous Dutch <\/p>\n

shipbuilder Neptune, with the assistance of PD Ports\u2019 technical specialists, to <\/p>\n

guarantee it can carry out its job on the Tees to the greatest environmental and <\/p>\n

safety requirements.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Emerald Duchess is now being built at a shipyard in Poland for <\/p>\n

commissioning ahead of testing in the Netherlands in 2024.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It will replace the Cleveland County, which serviced the Tees for 50 years <\/p>\n

under PD Ports\u2019 conservancy team.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The new vessel has been \u2018future-proofed\u2019 with a number of bespoke design <\/p>\n

features that will eventually allow carbon neutral operations.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Fitted with an innovative intelligent power management system, the Emerald <\/p>\n

Duchess can swap between power from a battery pack equivalent to 10 Tesla cars <\/p>\n

and fuel made from hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), also known as renewable <\/p>\n

diesel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to PD Ports, considerable modelling has taken conducted using <\/p>\n

computational fluid dynamics to build a hull that is as refined as possible when <\/p>\n

travelling through the water in order to decrease fuel use.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Emerald Duchess project is said to be capable of transporting 2,500 <\/p>\n

tonnes and containing up to 2,000 cubic metres of dredged material, and it is a <\/p>\n

further step towards PD Ports\u2019 goal of becoming Carbon Neutral by 2027.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Frans Calje, Chief Executive Officer of PD Ports, said: \u201cThe Emerald <\/p>\n

Duchess represents a major investment in our conservancy operations as SHA and <\/p>\n

shows our high level of commitment to the socio-economic development of the <\/p>\n

River Tees and the wider region.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vessel is a step ahead in terms of crew safety and sustainability and <\/p>\n

will strongly support our commitment to becoming a Carbon Neutral operation, <\/p>\n

using low emission fuel and an innovative layout to make it more fuel <\/p>\n

efficient.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery investment we make is targeted to keep our environmental impact to a <\/p>\n

minimum, while also supporting the growth and success of the region and the <\/p>\n

commercial operators who rely on the river. I look forward to the Duchess\u2019 <\/p>\n

arrival on our shores next summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benjamin Grefkens, Director Neptune Marine, stated: \u201cWe are proud that PD <\/p>\n

Ports entrusted us with providing them with the tools for their dredging <\/p>\n

activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe battery and DC-bus system-based power management system is a further <\/p>\n

expansion of Neptune Marine\u2019s innovative approach to future proof sustainable <\/p>\n

shipbuilding and operation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In March 2023, PD Ports announced a new long-term deal with worldwide <\/p>\n
