The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) has adopted the Clean Energy <\/p>\n

Marine Hubs Initiative (CEM-Hubs) at a summit in Goa, India.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Low-carbon<\/p>\n

The first-of-its-kind platform brings together the private sector and <\/p>\n

governments across the energy-maritime value chain to transform maritime <\/p>\n

transportation and production hubs for future low-carbon fuels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The CEM-Hubs initiative is initially backed by Canada, Norway, Panama, <\/p>\n

Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in partnership with the International <\/p>\n

Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and the International Association of Ports & <\/p>\n

Harbors (IAPH).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The CEM Hubs initiative is a partnership that\u2019s jointly led by private <\/p>\n

sector and governments working in close collaboration.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The energy maritime value chain is far from ready to transport the influx <\/p>\n

of low-carbon fuels that are expected between now and 2050.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To accommodate demand, the shipping industry is expected to transport at <\/p>\n

least 50 per cent of all traded low carbon fuels by 2050, according to the <\/p>\n

International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But the production centres, vessels and port infrastructure required to <\/p>\n

accommodate expected demand do not currently exist at commercial scale.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

So far only one ship in the whole global fleet has been piloted to <\/p>\n

transport liquefied hydrogen \u2013 travelling from Australia to Japan.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For hydrogen derivates such as ammonia and other low-carbon fuels moved by <\/p>\n

ships, the scale is far from what heavy industries, transport, and other sectors <\/p>\n

would require.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To support the global transition to net-zero targets, shipping is expected <\/p>\n

to transport between two and up to five times the low-carbon fuels it will <\/p>\n

consume by 2050.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The mix of fuels that shipping moves will also need to change to be aligned <\/p>\n

to the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Participants have convened in Goa for the first ever CEM-Hub meeting. The <\/p>\n

initiative was adopted less than a year after it was first presented, in an <\/p>\n

unprecedented move by the CEM that reflects the immense scale of the problem and <\/p>\n

urgency to establish solutions. The CEM-Hubs initiative and progress will be <\/p>\n

featured at the next COP28 in Dubai.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The initiative is also supported by the IRENA and the Global Centre for <\/p>\n

Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Gagn\u00e9, Head of Secretariat, Clean Energy Ministerial, said: <\/p>\n

\u201cPorts, shipping, and the logistics network need to be an integral part of the <\/p>\n

global clean energy transition.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Clean Energy Marine Hubs Initiative is a truly public-private platform <\/p>\n

between energy, maritime, shipping and finance communities.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt represents a unique opportunity to develop concrete implementable <\/p>\n

actions to ensure greener supply chains globally.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the GCMD and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have <\/p>\n
