Swiss marine power company, WinGD, and Japanese shipbuilder, <\/p>\n

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding <\/p>\n

(MoU) to enter into a partnership on ammonia-fuelled vessels.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"WinGD,<\/p>\n

The project will see WinGD applying its X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engines to a <\/p>\n

range of vessel designs, with Mitsubishi both designing the vessels and <\/p>\n

completing the fuel chain with its ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Manabu Kawakado, Head of Marine Engineering Centre, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding <\/p>\n

Co., Ltd. said: \u201cThis collaboration will give both Mitsubishi and WinGD an <\/p>\n

important first-mover advantage in using ammonia in marine engines to meet IMO <\/p>\n

decarbonisation targets.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Kawakado explained that this partnership will set the path for the new <\/p>\n

generation of technology applicable to a wide range of vessels over the next <\/p>\n

decades.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Under the partnership, WinGD will develop X-DF-A engines at appropriate <\/p>\n

sizes for the vessel designs, providing Mitsubishi with the specifications for <\/p>\n

installing the engines and the requirements for all auxiliary fuel systems.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Mitsubishi will design the vessels, set performance parameters for the <\/p>\n

engines and further develop its existing AFSS for use with WinGD\u2019s ammonia <\/p>\n

engines.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dominik Schneiter, Vice President R&D, WinGD said: \u201cThis project will <\/p>\n

allow WinGD and Mitsubishi to make further progress in bringing ammonia-fuelled <\/p>\n

capability to merchant vessels within our established future fuel development <\/p>\n

time frame.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Schneiter believes that this is a timely opportunity to apply X-DF-A <\/p>\n

engines across a wider range of bore sizes.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cOur aim is to develop the applicability of these engines and their <\/p>\n

critical fuel elements across multiple vessel types, while upholding the highest <\/p>\n

standards for environmental impact and for the safety of the crew on board,\u201d <\/p>\n

Schneiter added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The project will commence in the third quarter of 2023, with a timeline <\/p>\n

considered that could place vessels in service by 2027.<\/p>\n
