The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has launched the \u2018D-Hive drone-in-a-box\u2019 <\/p>\n

network to enhance security in the port area.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Antwerp port area is more than 120 square kilometres, and it will now <\/p>\n

be covered by the D-Hive network of six autonomous drones.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The drones are expected to offer a unique perspective from the air and <\/p>\n

enable the port authorities to manage, inspect, and supervise a large area <\/p>\n

quickly and effectively.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The port will use the drones for a range of functions including berth <\/p>\n

management, monitoring, infrastructure inspections, oil spill and floating waste <\/p>\n

detection, and to support security partners during incidents.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The 18 daily Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flights will be <\/p>\n

remotely controlled from a command-and-control centre in the heart of the <\/p>\n

port.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the first implementation worldwide of BVLOS flights on this scale <\/p>\n

in an industrial environment.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Unlike Visual Line Of Sight (VLOS) flights, these will take place out of <\/p>\n

the pilot\u2019s sight.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The network is the result of a partnership between the Port of <\/p>\n

Antwerp-Bruges, DroneMatrix, SkeyDrone, and Proximus.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Two months ago, the partners were given the green light to launch the drone <\/p>\n

network.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This operational permit was built around a new BVLOS framework known as <\/p>\n

pre-Uspace airspace, built by Skeydrone and approved by the Belgian Civil <\/p>\n

Aviation Authority (BCAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), as <\/p>\n

an appropriate and safe framework for BVLOS drone flights.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, said: \u201cGiven the huge <\/p>\n

surface area of the port, drones provide us with leverage when it comes to <\/p>\n

carrying out our core tasks as a port authority.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThis drone network will play a crucial role in the further roll-out of the <\/p>\n

port\u2019s Digital Twin, a digital copy based on thousands of pieces of data from a <\/p>\n

network of cameras, sensors and drone, giving a real-time picture of what is <\/p>\n

happening at the port every second,\u201d Vandermeiren added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In February, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges announced that Dutch tank storage <\/p>\n

company, Vopak, is acquiring the shares of Gunvor Petroleum Antwerp (GPA) from <\/p>\n

commodity trader, Gunvor Group.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

More recently, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and logistics provider, <\/p>\n

Routescanner, partnered to offer Routescanner\u2019s Direct Connections to shippers <\/p>\n
