Klaipėda Port passes key test for green hydrogen project
Klaipėda Port’s green hydrogen project has reached a key milestone as the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser successfully passed factory tests in Italy.
The electrolyser, manufactured at the IMI Remosa plant in Cagliari, will enable the port to produce around 127 tonnes of green hydrogen annually once operational.
The production and supply station, due to start operations next year, will power Lithuania’s first green hydrogen-driven vessel, currently nearing completion.
Klaipėda Port will be the first in Lithuania and among the Baltic States to produce and supply green hydrogen, supporting global sustainability efforts and regional energy transition goals.
The project, funded partly by the EU’s NextGenerationEU recovery facility with a total cost of approximately €12 million ($14 million), is on schedule for construction completion by the end of 2025.
Installation and testing of the hydrogen equipment will follow, with all works set to finish by February 2026.
Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, said: “Successfully completing the factory tests of the green hydrogen electrolyser is a major step forward for Klaipėda Port in its plans to produce, use and supply clean fuels. This milestone brings us much closer to finishing a unique project in the region and reducing our environmental footprint.
“The Port Authority and its partners have ensured the core systems of the green hydrogen base work flawlessly, allowing the project to stay on track. The equipment will be shipped to Klaipėda Port for installation and on-site testing. We plan to begin producing clean fuels next year.”
In September, the Port of Klaipėda completed a major project supporting Lithuania’s offshore wind farm development plans.
