The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has initiated a climate adaptation plan across its facilities in Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia, aiming to strengthen resilience against extreme weather events and rising sea levels.

Valenciaport advances Net Zero Plan with climate measures

The project forms part of Valenciaport’s Net Zero Emissions Plan, which guides all sustainability initiatives across the port complex.

The plan will assess risks from rough seas, heavy rainfall, heatwaves, and sea-level changes, prioritising critical infrastructure such as quays, breakwaters, terminals, access points, and operational areas.

Work has been awarded to Ineco for €181,229.35 ($210.438.17) and is expected to take 14 months to complete.

Valenciaport is aligning the adaptation measures with the Strategic Framework for the Port System of General Interest set by Puertos del Estado, which requires all state-owned ports to implement climate adaptation measures by 2030.

The study will analyse the vulnerability of the three ports, propose mitigation strategies, and provide cost-benefit analyses to ensure economic viability.

The climate adaptation work forms a key element of APV’s Net Zero Emissions Plan, which targets carbon neutrality across Valenciaport by 2035.

The initiative also aims to achieve full energy self-sufficiency to support the economic and commercial operations of all ports.

Measures under the plan include the construction of two new substations at the Port of Valencia, scheduled for 2026–2028, and the rollout of shore power supply points (OPS) at multiple terminals.

A smart energy management system utilising digital twins is also planned for 2027, enabling real-time monitoring and optimisation of energy consumption across port operations.

The initiative complements other strategic developments at Valenciaport, including the recent formalisation of the contract for the expansion of the Border Control building at the Port of Valencia, aimed at modernising facilities and increasing operational capacity.
