Cavotec has launched PowerAccESS, a modular and mobile battery energy storage system (ESS) built to support the electrification of port crane operations.

Cavotec launches modular battery system for port cranes

Designed for the demands of active port environments, PowerAccESS delivers zero-emission power to rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes during block changes, serving as a direct replacement for diesel generators.

The system can also be integrated into existing crane infrastructure as a hybrid power solution, offering terminals a phased route towards fully electric operations.

The unit runs on LiFePO4 batteries, chosen for their safety credentials and long service life, with scalable capacity ranging from 62 to 494 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Its rugged construction is rated for harsh marine environments, and its low-noise, zero local emissions profile addresses growing regulatory and operational pressure on port facilities.

PowerAccESS supports RTG block change, hybrid and full battery operating modes, giving crane manufacturers and terminal operators flexibility in how they deploy the technology.

Laurent Dupuis, VP of Product Management at Cavotec, said: “PowerAccESS represents another important step in Cavotec’s commitment to supporting the transition towards more sustainable and efficient port operations. The system has been designed to give crane manufacturers and terminal operators a flexible and scalable solution that reduces emissions while ensuring reliable performance in demanding operating conditions.”
