Ports of LA, Long Beach draft zero-emission truck incentives

Draft guidelines have been released for a new three-year programme to accelerate the transition to zero-emission trucking at the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach, together the largest US port complex.

The scheme will offer qualifying trucks incentives of $60 per terminal visit and up to $36,000 per vehicle annually.

The proposed Zero-Emission Truck Rewards Incentive Program (ZE-TRIP) forms part of rapid action by the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles to deliver on measures agreed last month with the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

The programme aims to make zero-emission trucks more cost-competitive, encourage greater use of the zero-emission trucks already in operation, and help attract more such vehicles to serve the ports.

Dr Noel Hacegaba, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, said: “We know cost is one of the biggest barriers for our trucking partners to transition to zero emissions. This incentive program is another tool in our decarbonisation playbook, helping offset the higher costs of owning and operating zero-emission trucks based on direct feedback from truckers about what they need. Closely collaborating with our supply chain partners has been critical to the environmental progress we have made already and it’s going to be even more important as we chase our zero-carbon goal.”
