APMT Gijon welcomes largest containership in port’s history

　　APM Terminals (APMT) Gijón has successfully operated the largest containership ever to stop at the Port of El Musel on Spain’s north coast.

　　The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Katyayni, a 275-metre-long, 40-metre-wide vessel, berthed at the terminal for 33 hours, loading and discharging 740 containers.

　　Improvements to the terminal to accommodate larger vessels would increase competitiveness for importers and exporters in northern Spain.

　　Improved handling operations were enabled by the arrival of a Post-Panamax QC903 ship-to-shore (STS) crane last year. According to APMT, the new crane has a notional load capacity of 40 tonnes, a height under spreader of 33 metres (eight more than the crane it replaces), and an outreach of 16 rows (three more than the crane it replaces).

　　For vessels longer than 250 metres, the terminal has a maximum draft of 10.2 metres.

　　This month, APMT named Manuel Delgado Managing Director (MD) of APMT Buenos Aires T4 in Argentina.
